“Failing to plan is planning to fail”
This is by far one of my favorite quotes and speaks to something I love doing – planning.
Today I’m going to share with you (regardless if you’re an old or new reader) where TheMDJourney is headed in 2019.
Now I’ll preface by saying 2018 was a great year.
- The site saw more visitors in the first months of the year than all of 2017.
- The youtube channel crossed 1,000 subscribers!
- I wrote 3 books! (Check them out here)
- I launched 2 video courses (Check them out here)
- And much more…
But with the success, I’m always focused on the future.
How can I get even better? How can I help more people? How can I do this in a more efficient way?
First let’s quickly talk about why TheMDJourney needs to change in 2019.
1. Beginning Residency in June
This is a big life change obviously.
While med school limited my free time, residency is going to make look that time feel like a vacation.
For probably the first time in my life, I will not be in control of my schedule. I’ll be an employee and a trainee.
So I have to prepare TheMDJourney for that change. I have to begin to focus my efforts on less and less so I can become the best doctor possible.
2. I’m Getting Married
One thing I realized about 2018 is that I got away from personal blogs and focused entirely on tips and how to posts.
While you all do resonate more with the advice posts, I did feel like the blog was missing a piece of me.
But 2019 will shift back towards some more personal stories and behind the scene look into my life. (So let’s call this post a step in the right direction.)
In 2019 I will be marrying my best friend and I’m super excited for the day to come.
With that being said, TheMDJourney will drop further down my priority list. (I can’t say “Sorry honey I got to blog so I’ll be missing dinner. That’d be a short marriage haha)
3. TheMDJourney is Transforming Into A Business
I debated putting this point down, but it’s true.
I love helping students on their medical journey. The day I don’t enjoy it will be the day I stop working on the website.
But in addition to providing helpful content, tips, and advice to med students and pre-meds, I consider TheMDJourney as my first real business.
With that comes the importance of watching my numbers and knowing how I can improve the monthly/annual income of the site.
Rest assured I will never sacrifice the mission of the site to make a quick buck. (I’m not expecting the site to become my primary source of income haha).
But I have seen income gradually grow and I want to see where I can take it.
My Vision For 2019:Â
More Content:
2019 will be one of the most dramatic changes to TheMDJourney.
Here’s why.
Even though my time will be slashed and my priorities will lie elsewhere – I will produce more than I have ever done!
Yep, that means more blog posts, videos, products, and content to help students like you!
How exactly do I plan on doing this?
I’m gradually growing my team and adding members to help me on tasks which take my time for very little results.
This includes editing, formatting, designs, etc. so I can spend time on what matters – creating content for you guys!
Transformed Product Platform:
The traditional approach in 2018 was to create something new, promote it, and hope it reached the right people.
Did it work? Yeah.
Can it work better? Heck yes!
Interested in how?
Well, I’m putting together my new delivery of product and love to have a group of readers help me craft it.

Visible Goals:Â
If you were with me back in 2016 when I started TheMDJourney then you remember my 20 day challenges.
You can read about my very first (and most popular) one here.
While I won’t be going back to those challenges, I do want my goals to be public.
Why? It forces me to try to achieve them.
So by the end of January 2019 expect a goals page to be added to TheMDJourney. (I’m inspired by Thomas Frank’s goal list and plan on creating one quite similar.)
A Load of New Products:
At the start of 2019 I emailed my 1,500 email subscribers what they wanted to see.
The results were flooded around a few core ideas.
- How to crush step 1 and Step 2 in med school
- How to become more productive and efficient in med school
- How to do well on the MCAT
- How to get into med school
- How to stay motivated
- How to get into residency
I read through each and every comment and I promise you those products, blogs, and video are coming!
I’m hoping that with a growing team that I can spend a majority of my time creating vs. admin stuff.
That’s my big breakdown of 2019.
Good news for you – TheMDJourney is going to be bigger and better than ever.
It’s already headed that way because of readers like you. So thank you for your support.
Hope you’re excited as I am.

Until next time my friend…
